What Is the SRD R370 Grant?

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a monthly cash payment of R370 paid by SASSA to South African citizens, permanent residents, and special permit holders who have no income or financial support. Introduced in May 2020 during COVID-19, it has been extended multiple times due to persistent unemployment levels.

As of June 2026, the SRD grant remains at R370 per month — unchanged from previous financial years. It is funded through to 31 March 2027, with R36.4 billion allocated in the 2026 Budget.

💡
Key difference from permanent grants: Unlike a permanent grant reviewed once, the SRD grant is re-assessed every single month. Your status can be Approved in April and Declined in May — automated checks against banks, SARS, UIF, and Home Affairs run fresh each cycle.
02

Who Qualifies?

You must meet all of the following to qualify:

🪪 South African citizen, permanent resident, or holder of a special permit (refugee, asylum seeker, or special dispensation)
🎂 Aged between 18 and 59 years (those 60+ qualify for the Older Persons Grant)
💸 No income, or income below R628 per month
🚫 Not receiving any other SASSA social grant
🏭 Not registered as a beneficiary of UIF
🎓 Not receiving NSFAS bursary or student allowance funding
🏛️ Not registered on any government payroll
🪙 Valid South African ID number

04

What Each Status Result Means

Approved

Your eligibility has been confirmed for that month. SASSA checked your details against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, and your bank — you passed all criteria. A personal payment date will appear on your status page.

→ Wait for your individual pay date shown on the portal
Pending

SASSA is still verifying your details for the current month. Normal during the first two weeks of each cycle. If pending beyond three weeks, update your details to trigger a fresh verification.

→ Wait 7–14 days; if 3+ weeks, call 0800 60 10 11
Declined

You didn’t meet one or more criteria for that specific month. Read the specific decline reason on the portal — common reasons include income identified, UIF registered, or identity mismatch.

→ Request reconsideration within 30 days
Declined: Income Source Identified

Deposits in your bank account totalled R628 or more during the assessed month. The system cannot distinguish salary from family transfers — all deposits are counted.

→ Reconsideration with bank statements + affidavit explaining deposits
Declined: Identity Verification Failed

Your ID number doesn’t match Home Affairs records. Often occurs after a name change, new smart ID, or data capture error.

→ Visit SASSA office with ID; may need Home Affairs correction first
Bank Details Pending

You’ve been approved but no valid bank account is linked, or verification is still in progress. Payment is held until bank details are confirmed.

→ Update banking details immediately on the SRD portal
Payment Failed / Reversed

SASSA sent payment but it was returned by your bank — usually due to an inactive/closed account or name mismatch.

→ Contact your bank, then update banking details; reprocessing takes 7–14 days
05

Why Your Status Changes Every Month

Every single month, SASSA runs a fresh eligibility check. This involves:

🏦 A database sweep of your bank account for incoming deposits (the means test)
🪪 A check with Home Affairs to verify your identity and confirm you are alive
👷 A check with UIF to see if you became employed or registered for benefits
📋 A check with SARS for registered income or a tax return
🔄 A cross-reference with all other SASSA grant payments
⚠️
Declined does not mean cancelled. A monthly decline means you need to either wait for the next cycle (if the issue resolves automatically) or request a reconsideration for the specific declined month.
06

The R628 Means Test Explained

SASSA checks the means test automatically by scanning your registered bank account for all deposits received in a given month. R628 is calculated as the food poverty line — the minimum required to purchase adequate food for one month.

🔴
The system cannot distinguish between different types of deposits. A R700 family transfer for rent is treated identically to a salary payment. It only sees numbers, not circumstances.

What Counts as Income

Salary or wages · Cash sent by family (EFT, CashSend, e-wallet) · NSFAS allowances · UIF payments · Stokvels/savings club payments · Any other bank deposit

What Does NOT Count

The Child Support Grant (CSG does not disqualify you) · Having no deposits at all

07

SRD R370 Payment Dates 2026

How to Appeal a Declined Status

Being declined is not the end. SASSA’s SRD appeal process has two stages — both are completely free. You do not need a lawyer.

  • 1
    Reconsideration — Within 30 Days
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za → find the declined month → click “Request Reconsideration” → provide a written explanation and attach supporting documents (bank statements, SAPS affidavit explaining each flagged deposit). You can also call 0800 60 10 11 or visit a SASSA office.
  • 2
ITSAA Formal Appeal — Within 90 Days
If your reconsideration is rejected, lodge a formal appeal with the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals within 90 days of the reconsideration outcome. If ITSAA rules in your favour, you receive back-pay. ITSAA’s decision is final.

SASSA Scams: Protect Yourself

🔒SASSA will never ask for your OTP, PIN, or password. Anyone claiming to be SASSA who asks for these is a scammer.
🆓SASSA will never ask you to pay a fee to “unlock” a payment, “release” a grant, or “speed up” verification. All services are free.
🌐Only use official SASSA websites: srd.sassa.gov.za · services.sassa.gov.za · sassa.gov.za. Never enter details on any other site.
🚫 The “R700 SASSA Grant” Scam

Posts claiming SASSA introduced a new R700 grant are completely false. There is no R700 grant. The SRD grant is R370. Anyone asking you to apply for R700 is a criminal.

🚫 The SIM Swap Scam

Criminals use SIM swaps to take over your phone number and request OTPs to redirect your grant payments. If you suddenly lose signal or stop receiving OTPs, call your mobile provider immediately, then call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

🚫 Paid Status Check Scam

No one can run a SASSA status check for a fee. The status check is free at srd.sassa.gov.za. Any website or person charging for this is scamming you.

🚫 Fake SASSA Websites

Scammers create sites that look exactly like the official portal. Always check the domain: srd.sassa.gov.za — not srd-sassa.co.za, sassaonline.net, or any other variation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my SASSA SRD R370 status?
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za, enter your 13-digit SA ID number and the cellphone number linked to your application, and click Submit. You can also check via USSD (*120*69277#) or SASSA WhatsApp (082 046 8553).
What does “Pending” mean on a SASSA status check?
SASSA is still verifying your details for the current month against Home Affairs, UIF, SARS, and bank records. Normal for the first two weeks. If pending more than three weeks, update your details on the portal or call 0800 60 10 11.
What does “Declined: Income Source Identified” mean?
The automated system detected deposits in your registered bank account totalling R628 or more during the assessed month. Request a reconsideration within 30 days with bank statements and a written explanation of any deposits that were not regular income.
Can I receive the SRD grant and the Child Support Grant at the same time?
Yes. The Child Support Grant (R580) does not disqualify you from receiving the SRD grant. However, receiving any other SASSA grant (Older Persons, Disability, Foster Child, etc.) will disqualify you from SRD.
Why does my SASSA status change every month?
The SRD grant requires monthly re-verification. SASSA automatically checks your bank account, UIF status, Home Affairs records, and SARS data every month before releasing payment. A change from Approved to Declined does not mean your application was cancelled — it means you didn’t pass the automated checks for that specific month.
Is there a new R700 SASSA grant in 2026?
No. There is no R700 grant. Posts claiming SASSA introduced a new R700 grant are false and are used by scammers to collect personal information or money. The SRD grant remains R370. Only use official SASSA channels.
Do I need to reapply every month for the SRD grant?
No. Once you have an active SRD application, SASSA automatically re-assesses your eligibility each month. You do not need to reapply unless your application has lapsed or shows “Reapplication Required.” Keep your contact and banking details current.
What if someone changed my SASSA details without my consent?
This is identity fraud. Call SASSA immediately on 0800 60 10 11 and ask for your profile to be frozen. Then open a case at your nearest SAPS station. Visit a SASSA office in person with your ID document for biometric verification and profile restoration.
